These previous methods require very long chemical preparations of the sample before being analysed by mass spectrometry. The main advantage of the use of the radioactive isotope is that no chemical preparation is needed and samples are readily analysed with a standard liquid scintillation counter. Moreover, the specific activity has been increased allowing to use it even in oligotrophic waters, where ambient silicic acid concentrations are very low.
