For higher plants a linear relation between fluorescence yield and electron transport has been observed. Edwards and Baker (1993) concluded that under a wide range of conditions the fluorescence yield can be used to predict accurately and rapidly CO<sub>2</sub> assimilation rates in maize. Up to now it is an open question whether it is also possible to calculate the production rates of phytoplankton by analysis and measurement of fluorescence yield. This would give us a new tool for fast measurements of primary productivity in the sea. In order to assess the usefulness of the (Pulse-Amplitude-Modulated) PAM-fluorescence method to estimate primary production in marine phytoplankton we have examined the relation between the rate of relative photosystem II electron transport determined with the PAM-fluorescence technique and the rate of carbon fixation as measured with the conventional <sup>14</sup>C-technique for different marine phytoplankton species (e.g., <i>Skeletonema costatum</i>, <i>Thalassiosira weissflogii</i>, <i>Prorocentrum redfieldii</i>, <i>Dunaniella</i> spec.) and microphytobenthos communities under different irradiance levels.
