The lagoon of Araruama is an hypersaline area more than 210 km² in surface in connection with the sea by a narrow channel 5 km long and no more than 4 m deep. Morphological abnormalities of the foraminiferal tests have been studied in 15 superficial sediment samples from the lagune in order to evaluate the proportions of abnormal tests and to understand the factors which may induce these morphological perturbations. Abnormal tests have often been reported in the literature. They have been related either to mecanical causes (high energy hydrodynamics) or to other natural and anthropogenic environmental causes, mainly pollution. The lagoon of Araruama, characterized by hypersalinity and oligotrophic waters, shows high rates of abnormal tests. The average values of the abnonnal test percentages vary between 3 to 24 % when considering all the species together. However, the various species react differently. A maximum of 44 % was observed in a population of Ammonia tepida. These high values are probably induced by environmental stresses due to hypersalinity, salinity changes and to a lesser extend oligotrophy. The highest values are in the west part and in the entrance channel where salinity variations are the strongest. They result either from freshwater input (0 ‰) from small rivers or from marine water input (about 35 ‰) in the hypersaline water (40 to 65 ‰). These observations suggest that the hypersalinity and the variation of salinity can induce natural stresses able to generate morphological abnormalities on the foraminiferal tests, like pollution. This must be taken into account in order to use foraminifers as bioindicators of quality in paralic environments where environmental stresses are very important.","BibLvlCode":"AS","StandardTitle":"Les anomalies morphologiques des tests des foraminifères de la lagune d'Araruama (Brésil) = Morphological abnormalities of the foraminiferal tests in the lagoon of Araruama (Brazil)","OrigTitleLangCode":"fr","OrigTitleLangCodeExtended":"fre","OrigTitleLangID":22,"DateLastModified":{"date":"2024-12-10 01:33:17.368041","timezone_type":1,"timezone":"+01:00"},"UserAccessRight":null,"UserAccID":null,"AuthorKeywords":null,"OtherDescriptors":null,"Notes":null,"AnaPub":2000,"MonPub":null,"DateUpdate":"2001-12-10","DateCreate":"2001-03-27","SecASFANote":null,"ConfID":null,"PeerRev":1,"VlizCoreFlag":1,"WoScode":null,"VABBcode":null,"OpenAcc":0},"refs":null,"anarec":{"AnaID":7129,"PubliDate":2000,"Pagination":"43-52","XtraPublOfAnaID":null,"ISBN":null,"Volume":"25","Issue":"3-4","BRefMon":null,"BRefMonRR":null,"BRefXtra":null,"BRefXtraRR":null,"SerBRefID":43197,"SerRR":"Journal de Recherche Océanographique.
