The research group of General Botany and Nature Management has been using remote sensing trough aerial photography in the research of mangrove vegetation and dynamics for some time. The advent of very high resolution satellites has arisen the question if the images acquired trough such satellites can be used as an alternative for aerial photography. Preliminary research into the usefulness resulted in positive results but couldn’t make final conclusions because there was a lack of ground truthing data.This study continuous on the results of this preliminary research and will asses the usefulness of the classifications of the very high resolution satellite imagery in the research of the composition of mangrove assemblages and dynamics supplemented with an accuracy assessment.Results point towards a extensive usefulness of the images despite the fact that the accuracy of the classifications is rather low. An analysis of spectral information on its own allows the identification of different assemblages.","AbstractOtherLang":"Teledetectie, of de analyse van fenomenen van op een afstand is een nuttig hulpmiddel bij het in kaart brengen van verschillende fenomenen. De onderzoeksgroep APNA (Algemene Plantkunde en Natuurbeheer) maakt al enige tijd gebruik van luchtfotografie in het onderzoek naar de samenstelling en de dynamiek van mangroveassemblages. De opkomst van satellieten die beelden met zeer hoge ruimtelijke resolutie opnemen, heeft de vraag doen rijzen of dit soort gegevens niet als alternatiefvoor luchtfoto's kon dienen. Preliminair onderzoek naar die bruikbaarheid resulteerde in hoopgevende resultaten maar kon door een tekort aan grondgegevens in het onderzoeksgebied geen finale resultaten aanbieden.Dit onderzoek gaat verder op de resultaten van het preliminair onderzoek en zal de bruikbaarheid van classificaties ván zeer hoge resolutie satellietbeelden in het onderzoek naar de samenstelling en dynamiek van mangroveassemblages alsook de juistheid van die classificaties nagaan.De resultaten wijzen op een grote bruikbaarheid van de beelden ondanks het feit dat de classificatiejuistheid vrij laag is.
