From this scheme it is considered that the succession from grassland towards scrub is a natural process, driven by the accumulation of humus and decalcification of the dune-sand. This process is strengthened by (anthropogenic) fixation of grasslands, causing a reduction of natural dynamics. It is argued that the development of scrubs is a problem in Doing's 'K-Iandscape' and 'R-landscape' especially, because of the valuable grasslands in these landscape-units. Nevertheless, also the scrubs developing here (<i>Rhamno- Crataegetum</i>) contribute highly to biodiversity. The described 'ageing of the landscape' can be reversed by re-dynamisation, in which grazing can play an important role.
