The traditional standard volumetric method was used for estimating the total fecundity and ovaries in prespawning condition were digested in Gilson's fluid. The histometric method, which has been developed at the Fisheries Laboratory Lowestoft (UK), has a number of advantages. The use of Gilson's fluid, a persistent poison, is avoided and maturity stages can be confirmed by identifying post-ovulatory follicles.
