In October 1984 two large poleward meanders of South Atlantic thermocline water, separated by a cold-core cyclonic eddy near 40 degree S and 50 degree W, were observed west of 46 degree W. The western branch is capped by a low salinity layer, the origin of which appears to be a mixture of continental shelf water with surface water from the Brazil Current. South of the western branch are two warm-core eddies.
