Hatching spines are present on the outer margin of each lobe of the telson and strong body movements of the embryo cause these spines to rupture the egg membranes. Hatching and moulting from the embryonic cuticle take place simultaneously. Both spp show a correlation between breeding activity and the lunar cycle. Brood size is dependent on the size of the female and the season. and in both spp is greatest in the overwintering generation. Differences in brood size between overwintering generation.
