The Apulian slope is a down-faulted passive margin covered by irregular unconsolidated Plio-Quaternary sediments. The sedimentary fill rests on presumed discontinuous upper Miocene deposits and on Mesozoic and Cainozoic strata (acoustic basement). The Taranto valley is a thickly sedimented trench-like feature that is the submerged extension of the onshore Bradanic fore-deep. The eastern Calabrian margin, intensively cut by normal faulting, comprises a lower acoustic sequence representing the widespread \"allochtonous Apenninic\" units.
