Research on arsenic in marine sediments, sea water, marine algae, and marine animals is reviewed from 1900 to the present. Emphasis is placed on work examining the chemical form of arsenic in the various marine compartments. In marine ecosystems arsenic can occur in many different chemical forms, including arsenite and arsenate, methyl arsonic and dimethylarsinic acids, trimethylarsine oxide, tetramethylarsonium ion, arsenobetaine, and a number of arsenic-containing ribosides.
