Gravid females showed a greater resistance to high temperatures than adult males in both species, and starvation tolerance was in the order gravid females>juvenile males> adult males. Time-temperature relationships, however, would seem to be of greater ecological significance than upper or lower lethal temperatures, and desiccation effects become obvious well within any limits set by starvation. Exposure would appear to be an important concept limiting the intertidal distribution of sand dwelling animals, particularly those confined to the surface layers of sediment.
