I have achieved this by exploiting to the full the superlative temporal resolution that can be achieved in recording the ionic and gating currents in the squid giant axon, and by relating the results to Numa's structural evidence (Noda et al. 1984) that each channel is controlled by four voltage-sensors arranged in parallel.
