Unless essential to the discussion, there is no reference to work published before 1957. In addition, the following subjects have been excluded: (1) the biochemistry of substances extracted from the animal; (2) specialized physiology, including research on nerves of squid and <i>Aplysia</i>; (3) taxonomy; (4) records of distribution where locality is given but no ecological implications are expressed; (5) histology and anatomy; (6) the use of molluscan eggs in cell research-cell contents and the mechanics and chemistry of cleavage; (7) research on molluscan smooth muscle, including tropomyosin and other amino acids; (8) shellfish poisoning due to toxic bacteria and their products ; (9) non-molluscan predators of molluscs. Although these topics have been excluded, it will be seen from the bibliography that a huge volume of literature remains. Since editorial policy is aimed at bibliographical completeness, this inevitably means that this review is more descriptive than critical. Some aspects have been emphasized less than others because there has been a recent account or review.
