Migration of ammonites between and within the realms was episodic and clearly linked to long- and short-term changes in sea-level. Long-term falls in sea-level provided barriers to migration and resulted in a decrease in diversity at family/subfamily level. Diversity and migration increased as sea-level rose through late Berriasian to Hauterivian times. During this interval the episodic nature of migration is clearly linked with short-term sea-level rises. Often the migrant faunas became extinct quickly, but at times they diversified rapidly to produce thriving new evolutionary lineages by allopatric speciation.
