The book contains the result of a multi-disciplinary investigation, called the BOEDE project, into the structure and function of an estuarine ecosystem which is heavily stressed by organic wastes from the potato-processing industry. The first two chapters describe the research structure and the scientific approach underlying the investigation. Chapter 3 treats the hydrography of the area and gives an introduction to the biology of the system. In chapter 4 an overview of the behaviour of nutrients is given, as well as a description of the oxygen cycle. Chapters 5-7 describe the main biological components and the processes regulating them; both planktonic and benthic primary production, zoobenthos, zooplankton, nekton and both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria are treated in these chapters. Chapter 8 is devoted to dead organic material (detritus), its composition, and the mineralization of it. In chapter 9 the entire system is taken into consideration by comparing average biomasses and carbon fluxes. In chapter 10 simulation models are presented which describe the dynamical behaviour of the system. A general description of the modelling procedure as well as some results are given. The final chapter examines the role of the man-made stress to the Ems-Dollard estuary, and the ways in wich these stresses influence the ecosystem.","AbstractOtherLang":"Dieses Buch, wurde hauptsächlich geschrieben für Beamte auf allen Verwaltungsebenen, die Entscheidungen treffen bezüglich des Estuars. Es beschreibt das Oekosystem des Ems-Dollard Estuars und die Einflüsse auf dieses Ökosystem. Das Buch enthält die Ergebnisse einer multidisziplinären Untersuchung (BOEDE-Projekt genannt) der Strukturen und Funktionen eines estuarinen Oekosystems das den Abwässern der Kartoffelverarbeitenden Industrie ausgesetzt ist. Die ersten zwei Kapitel erläutern die Struktur der Untersuchung und den wissenschaftlichen Einstieg in das Projekt. lm dritten Kapitel wird die Hydrographie des Estuars erörtert, und eine Einleitung in die Biologie des Systems gegeben. Kapitel vier gibt eine Uebersicht über das Verhalten der Nährsalze und eine Beschreibung des Sauerstoffhaushalts des Gebietes. Die Kapitel fünf bis sieben legen die wichtigsten biologischen Komponenten und die Prozesse, durch die diese reguliert werden, dar, darunter die primäre Produktion, sowohl planktonisch als benthisch, das Zoobenthos, das Zooplankton, das Nekton und aerobe sowie anaerobe Bakterien. Kapitel acht ist dem leblosen organischen Material gewidmet (Detritus); sowohl seine chemische Zusammensetzung als die mineralisation werden behandelt. Kapitel neun erörtert die Kohlenstoffströme durch das System, und zwar nach statischem Gesichtspunkt auf der Grundlage von Jahresmittelwerten. In Kapitel zehn wird diese statische Betrachtungsweise abgelöst durch eine dynamische; die mathematischen Simulationsmodelle, wie sie von der BOEDE Projektgruppe entwickelt wurden, werden hier vorgeführt, und einige der damit erzielten Ergebnisse werden dargelegt.
