Het voorbereiden van de experimentele metingen is opgestart in de periode 1994-1995, waarna tot op heden continu prototype metingen zijn uitgevoerd. De numerieke modellering is gestart in 1996, en is in de periode 1997-1998 intensief ontwikkeld. Tijdens 1999 heeft dit proefschrift langzaamaan zijn definiteve vorm verkregen.<br><br> In hoofdstuk 2 wordt de theoretische basis gelegd voor het verdere vervolg van het proefschrift. Er wordt een beknopt overzicht verschaft van de gebruikte tweedimensionale basisvergelijkingen voor niet-permanente stroming van water met een vrij oppervlak.<br><br> Hoofdstuk 3 rapporteert een literatuurstudie i.v.m. de poreuze stroming in grofkorrelig materiaal en verzamelt praktische rekenwaarden voor de coëfficiënten van het geschikt bevonden mathematische Forchheimer model. Dit hoofdstuk is een belangrijke basis voor zowel de experimentele studie van de prototype metingen als de numerieke modellering van de golfinteractie aangezien de poreuze stroming in beide gevallen aan bod komt.<br><br> Na de voorgaande twee theoretische hoofdstukken, volgt in hoofdstuk 4 een beschrijving van de meetopstelling op de stortsteengolfbreker te Zeebrugge. De infrastructuur, instrumentatie en het data acquisitiesysteem die in het kader van dit proefschrift ontwikkeld zijn, worden in detail voorgesteld, met oog voor de bereikte meetnauwkeurigheid. Tenslotte wordt een overzicht gegeven van de opgestelde databank met prototype meetgegevens.<br><br> In hoofdstuk 5 wordt de golfinteractie met stortsteengolfbrekers bestudeerd, gebaseerd op experimentele meetgegevens. De studie betreft voornamelijk de voortplanting van de golven in de kern van de golfbreker, en de daardoor geïnduceerde poriëndrukken. Eerst worden de beschikbare experimentele gegevens uit de literatuur verzameld, kritisch bekeken en verder geanalyseerd. Vervolgens worden de in het kader van dit werk uitgevoerde fysische proeven geanalyseerd. Tenslotte worden de prototype metingen van de meetopstelling te Zeebrugge in detail geanalyseerd. Deze laatste analyse is een zeer belangrijk onderdeel van deze experimentele studie aangezien nooit eerder dergelijke prototype meetgegevens beschikbaar waren. Uit de studie van alle experimentele gegevens zal een rekenmodel opgesteld worden ter voorspelling van de door de golven geïnduceerde poriëndrukken in de kern.<br><br> In het kader van de ontwikkeling van een algemene numerieke golfgoot zal in hoofdstuk 6 zowel een nieuwe methode voor passieve absorptie als voor actieve absorptie van de golven opgesteld worden. De actieve absorptiemethode krijgt de meeste aandacht, en wordt op theoretische wijze afgeleid. Voor praktisch gebruik van de methode zullen ontwerprichtlijnen geformuleerd worden, met programmatuur voor de automatisatie van het ontwerp.<br><br> De beschrijving van de numerieke oplossingsalgoritmes om het in hoofdstuk 2 geformuleerde mathematische model op te lossen, is verzameld in hoofdstuk 7. Het doel van deze beschrijving is het verschaffen van een diepgaand inzicht in de mogelijkheden en de nauwkeurigheid van de oplossingen van het numerieke basismodel, zodat de nodige uitbreidingen in hoofdstuk 8 succesvol kunnen ingebouwd worden.<br><br> Deze belangrijke en vernieuwende uitbreidingen van hoofdstuk 8 zullen opgedeeld worden in drie kernen: (i) een model voor de simulatie van poreuze stroming, (ii) een randvoorwaarde voor de gecombineerde golfgeneratie en actieve absorptie in de numerieke golfgoot, (iii) een numerieke sponslaag als passieve absorptie. Hoofdstuk 8 bevat alle technische details van de inbouw in de programmatuur van het numerieke model, en steunt op de verworven inzichten van hoofdstukken 2, 3 en 7.<br><br> Het validatieproces van hoofdstuk 9 valideert de numerieke simulaties uitgevoerd met de nieuwe numerieke golfgoot.
