Geochemical logging tools have been recentIy developed; they enable a rapid and continuous record of elemental composition, lithology, mineralogy and physicochemical properties of sedimentary series. High resolution electron microscopy techniques lead to a better knowledge of the fine-grained constituents of past sediments such as clay minerals: sources, conditions of transport and deposition, tectonic and diagenetic control. Recent progress in paleoceanography is considered about the thermal structure of the ocean, the dissolution of pelagic carbonates, the sedimentary hiatuses and the paleocirculation characteristics; it indicates strong differences between past geological and recent conditions. The accumulations of organic matter during geological times are described in relation with the hydrologic structure of the basins, the plate tectonic context and the large-scale cycles of the Earth's history. Final!y the rhythmic sedimentary events, associated with climatic and biologic changes, are replaced among the astronomical forcing phenomena, which sometimes interfer with internal terrestrial causes. .","AbstractOtherLang":"La sédimentologie marine fait actuellement l'objet d'un renouveau des méthodes et des concepts, dont plusieurs exemples sont considérés. Les diagraphies géochimiques conduisent à l'obtention rapide et en continu de données sur la composition élémentaire, la lithologie, la minéralogie et d'autres propriétés physicochimiques des séries sédimentaires. La microscopie électronique à haute résolution conduit à préciser les conditions de transport et dépót, de contrôle tectonique et diagénétique, pour les constituants les plus fins des sédiments tels que les argiles. Les progrès en cours en paléocéanographie montrent la différence des conditions anciennes et récentes considérées à propos de la structure thermique des océans, de la dissolution des carbonates pélagiques, des hiatus sédimentaires et des paléocirculations marines. Les accumulations de matière organique durant les temps géologiques sont examinées en fonction de la structure hydrologique des bassins, du contexte tectonique global et des grands cycles de l'histoire de la Terre.
