One of the topics of particular interest is the location of the \"home waters\" of hake, or the locus in which the genus <i>Merluccius</i> first evolved. Closely allied is the question of the dispersal routes which led it to occupy its present range. There are 2 opposing views which place the cradle of <i>Merluccius</i> in 2 completely different and widely separated areas; and hence do not agree on the paths of its dispersal. In this paper the authors examine the effectiveness of using the parasitic fauna, particularly parasitic Copepoda, as biological tags to investigate phylogenetic and zoogeographical problems. The authors place the area of hake's origin near the southern tip of early Eocene Greenland, about 50 million years ago.
