The variety of the problems in processing of samples and in procedure of calculation is discussed, and it is concluded that aspects as influence of freezing and background fluorescence deserve more study. The relation between the measurement of gut clearance rate in starvation experiments and the actual get passage time under field conditions is treated in a theoretical model. Changes in the pattern of faecal pellet production result in overestimating gut passage time and may invalidate the general applicability of the model of exponential decrease of gut contents. In a starvation experiment with Calanus finmarchicus coprophagy by CIII/CIV occurred within 2 h.
