According to results from laboratory cultures, the low temperatures encountered in deep water increase the development time of the eggs from 1.1 to 1.7 days and the generation time from 31.1 to 36.8 days. A possible reason for this apparently disadvantageous behaviour could be the avoidance of visual predation by planktivorous fish. Theoretical calculations show that migration is advantageous when the daily mortality caused by predation in the surface layer exceeds 7.5%.
