This fact, together with the present lack of studies on genetics of freshwater sponges, necessitated the erection of the new gen <i>Saturnospongilla</i> and the description of the new sp <i>S. carvalhoi</i> sp. nov. The complexity of the spicular set of this new gen facilitates generalization of the hypothesis of a hybrid origin of the other presently known monotypic genera of freshwater sponges which also display a 'multiple' spicular composition. Reproduction of these hybrid sponges is in agreement with presence of gemmules in all such monotypic genera.
