These otoliths constitute the only known fossil material. They trace back the ancestry of the taxon to at least the Early Miocene and extend its past geographical range to a considerable part of the eastern Pacific coasts and to the Mediterranean. At least four taxa are recognised: <i>S. goederti</i> n. sp. from the Lower Miocene of Washington State, <i>S. svennielseni</i> n. sp. from the Upper (?)
