The Systems Ecology and Resource Management research unit was founded in 2007. The group seeks to understand and to predict how and why spatial and temporal dynamics in vegetation and landscapes occur, and what the effects are on their ecosystem functions, goods and services. The main focus is on (sub)tropical vegetation and especially on mangrove ecosystems. The research unit is the general coordinator of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in Tropical Biodiversity and Ecosystems. The group has published over 200 peer-reviewed papers in renowned journals including as 'Science', 'Nature Plants', 'Current Biology' and 'Frontiers in Marine Science'. In the marine domain, the group focuses on mangrove forests, with links to neighbouring ecosystems such as coral reefs. The research unit adopts a retrospective approach, using relevant methods from different disciplines (tropical botany, very high resolution remote sensing and ground truthing, socio-ecological survey research, historic archive research, etc.) and integrative analyses (using GIS, multivariate and multicriteria analyses, etc.), in order to generate outputs relevant for a fundamental understanding of ecosystem functioning (status, resilience), for forecasting changes and for ecosystem management (conservation, restoration, governance). Within this framework, the group is also interested in changes in biodiversity and in climate, and on ecological and ethological plant - animal and man - ecosystem interactions, particularly in an attempt to early warn for ecological degradation and unsustainable exploitation practices. The research is done on different spatial scales from the case-study level in different American, African and Asian countries to the macroecological level (global) and also explores the science-policy interface.

Het laboratoire d'Écologie des Systèmes et Gestion des Ressources werd opgericht in 2007. Deze onderzoeksgroep tracht te begrijpen en te voorspellen hoe en waarom ruimtelijke en temporele dynamiek in vegetatie en landschappen optreedt, en wat de effecten zijn op hun ecosysteemfuncties, goederen en diensten. De nadruk ligt op (sub)tropische vegetatie en in het bijzonder op mangrove-ecosystemen. De onderzoekseenheid is de algemene coördinator van de Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in Tropical Biodiversity and Ecosystems. De groep heeft meer dan 200 peer-reviewed papers gepubliceerd in gerenommeerde tijdschriften als 'Science', 'Nature Plants', 'Current Biology' en 'Frontiers in Marine Science'. In het mariene domein richt de groep zich op mangrovebossen, met links naar naburige ecosystemen, zoals koraalriffen. Het onderzoek vindt plaats op verschillende ruimtelijke schalen, van casestudies in verschillende Amerikaanse, Afrikaanse en Aziatische landen tot het macro-ecologische niveau (wereldwijd), en verkent ook het raakvlak tussen wetenschap en beleid.
