The Operational Directorate Earth and History of Life is part of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (RBINS) which was founded in 1846 under its former name, the 'Koninklijk Natuurhistorisch Museum van België' (Royal Belgian Natural History Museum). The Directorate conducts fundamental and applied research in the fields of geology, palaeontology, bioarchaeology and human evolution. Three multidisciplinary research programmes can be distinguished:

• Researchers from the 'Geological Survey of Belgium' study the evolution of the lithosphere, the geological component of our environment and its mineral and energy resources. This group also provides scientific expertise within EuroGeoSurveys;
• The 'Palaeobiosphere Evolution' programme conducts research with regard to the evolution of the biosphere and its interactions with the geosphere: the biodiversity and evolution of fossil flora and fauna, the reconstruction of fossil environments and palaeoclimatology;
• Researchers on the 'Quartenary Environments and Humans' programme study the physical and cultural aspects of human evolution, as well as the interactions between humans and their physical and biotic environment in the past. Funded by the regions, the group also provides expertise in the field of archaeosciences.

In each of these research programmes marine topics are covered:

• In the 'Geological Survey of Belgium' research is conducted on the dynamics of sedimentary basins, studying inter alia the stratigraphy and sedimentology of marine records. The Geological Survey also focuses on the reconstruction of the geological history of natural hazards (tsunamis) and the reconstruction of the oceanic geochemical fluctuations and biotic turnovers;
• The research programme 'Palaeobiosphere Evolution' studies the evolution and dynamics of marine palaeoecosystems during critical periods in the history of life on earth, through the integration of palaeobiological, geophysical and geochemical information. Furthermore, research is conducted on the origin and early diversification of cetaceans during the Eocene, as well as the evolution of marine mammal faunas (cetaceans, sirenians and pinnipeds) in the North Sea basin during the Neogene;
• The 'Quaternary Environments and Human' programme focuses on the reconstruction of the changing environments of low-lying coastal plains during the Pleistocene and Holocene. Finally, the evolution of fish exploitation and trade are studied.

De Operationele Directie (OD) Aarde en Geschiedenis van het Leven maakt deel uit van het Koninklijk Belgisch Instituut voor Natuurwetenschappen (KBIN) dat in 1846 werd opgericht onder de toenmalige naam, het Koninklijk Natuurhistorisch Museum van België. De groep verricht fundamenteel en toegepast onderzoek in de domeinen van de geologie, paleontologie, bioarcheologie en evolutie van de mens. Er kunnen drie multidisciplinaire onderzoeksprogramma's onderscheiden worden:

• De onderzoekers van de 'Belgische Geologische Dienst' bestuderen de evolutie van de lithosfeer, de geologische samenstelling van onze omgeving en de minerale en energetische natuurlijke rijkdommen. Ze leveren als federale geologische dienst ook de wetenschappelijke expertise in het kader van EuroGeoSurveys;
• Het onderzoeksprogramma 'Evolutie van de Paleobiosfeer' onderzoekt de evolutie van de biosfeer en de interacties met de geosfeer: biodiversiteit en evolutie van de fossiele fauna en flora, reconstructie van het fossiele milieu en paleoklimatologie;
• De onderzoekers van het onderzoeksprogramma 'Mens en Milieu in het Quartair' bestuderen de fysieke en culturele aspecten van de menselijke evolutie en de interacties tussen de mens en zijn fysieke en biotische omgeving in het verleden. De wetenschappers leveren expertise in het vakgebied van de Archeowetenschappen, gesubsidieerd door de Regio's.

In elk van deze onderzoeksprogramma's komen mariene thema's aan bod:

• Binnen de 'Belgische Geologische Dienst' wordt onderzoek verricht naar de dynamiek van sedimentaire bekkens waarbij onder meer de stratigrafie en sedimentologie van mariene sedimenten bestudeerd worden. Verder zet men in op het reconstrueren van de geologische geschiedenis van natuurrampen (bv. tsunami's) en het reconstrueren van de oceanische geochemische fluctuaties en biotische turnovers;
• In het programma 'Evolutie van de Paleobiosfeer' richt men zich onder andere op de evolutie en de dynamiek van mariene paleo-ecosystemen tijdens kritieke perioden in de geschiedenis van het leven op aarde door de integratie van paleobiologische, geofysische en geochemische informatie. Verder wordt ook de oorsprong en vroege diversificatie van walvisachtigen tijdens het Eoceen onderzocht evenals de evolutie van de fauna van zeezoogdieren (visachtigen, sirenen en zeeroofdieren) in het Noordzeebekken tijdens het Neogeen;
• Het onderzoeksprogramma 'Mens en Milieu in het Quartair' verricht onderzoek naar de reconstructie van laaggelegen kustzones in het Pleistoceen en Holoceen. Ten slotte wordt eveneens gefocust op de studie van de evolutie van de visexploitatie en -handel.
