The port of Antwerp is the gateway to Europe, through which more than 150 million tonnes of cargo flows every year - a figure that is constantly on the increase. Antwerp is the second largest port in Europe for international shipping freight and the fourth largest in the world. But freight transhipment is by no means the port’s only activity: goods are also stored, repacked, dispatched and then distributed to their final destinations from Antwerp. Antwerp’s central position within North West Europe makes it a preferred location, offering excellent access to the major European industrial centres and a large potential consumer base. As a seaport, Antwerp is an important link in the chain of international trade. And thanks to its enormous storage capacity the port acts as the supermarket of Europe where all types of products obtain the specialised handling and storage that they require. Finally, Antwerp is the perfect port of the future as it is the only seaport that can receive millions of tonnes of cargo so far inland. Cargo can be brought 80 km inland to Antwerp by the most environmentally friendly means of transport, which therefore avoids many truckloads having to be carried over the same distance. From a European perspective, Antwerp is the best choice from not only an economic but also from an ecological point of view. Strong in this conviction, the port of Antwerp has set itself the firm ambition of expanding its annual freight volume to 300 million tonnes.

De haven van Antwerpen is de toegangspoort tot Europa. Jaarlijks behandelt de Antwerpse haven meer dan 150 miljoen goederen, een cijfer dat elk jaar toeneemt. Antwerpen is voor de internationale maritieme trafiek de tweede haven van Europa en de vierde van de wereld. In de Antwerpse haven gebeurt trouwens veel meer dan lossen en laden. Goederen worden er opgeslagen, herverpakt, verdeeld en op transport gezet naar hun eindbestemming. De centrale ligging in Noordwest-Europa maakt van Antwerpen een gegeerde locatie door haar uitstekende verbinding met de belangrijkste Europese industriële en consumentencentra. De Antwerpse zeehaven is een belangrijke schakel in de internationale handel. Dankzij de enorme opslagcapaciteit kan de haven van Antwerpen bovendien als de “supermarkt” van Europa worden beschouwd waar alle producten een gespecialiseerde opvang en transport vinden. Antwerpen is tot slot de perfecte haven voor de toekomst want het is de enige haven die miljoenen tonnen goederen zo ver landinwaarts kan ontvangen. Goederen worden met het milieuvriendelijkste vervoersmiddel tot op 80 km landinwaarts gebracht, een traject dat dus niet telkens per vrachtwagen moet worden afgelegd. Vanuit Europees perspectief is de Antwerpse haven economisch en ecologisch de meest verantwoorde keuze. De haven van Antwerpen heeft dan ook de ambitie om te groeien tot een jaarlijkse goederenoverslag van 300 miljoen ton.
