The laboratory of Protistology and Aquatic Ecology (PAE) studies marine, freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems, with an emphasis on coastal systems and polar-alpine and temperate regions. There is a strong focus on the biodiversity, ecological roles and evolutionary history of unicellular eukaryotes as well as on past and present impacts of global change on the composition and function of microbiomes in these systems. The lab hosts the BCCM/DCG, a public Biological Resource Center (BRC), specialised in diatoms and other microalgae and part of the Belgian coordinated collections of microorganisms. The lab has a long-standing history of research on diatoms, which are the focus of a long-term integrative research line, including cell biology of new model diatom species, population genomics and macroecological and biogeographical studies. In an applied context, the group focuses among others on harmful algal bloom monitoring and control, and algal biotechnology. Research topics include:

• species diversity, speciation and micro-evolution of protists;
• aquatic and soil microbiome biogeography and function;
• chemical ecology of microbial interactions;
• life cycle regulation and genotype-phenotype relationships in microalgae;
• (palaeo)environmental change in lake, estuarine and coastal ecosystems.

Het laboratorium voor Protistologie en Aquatische Ecologie (PAE) bestudeert mariene, zoetwater- en terrestrische ecosystemen, met de nadruk op kustsystemen en polaire-alpiene en gematigde gebieden. Er is een sterke focus op de biodiversiteit, ecologische functies en evolutionaire geschiedenis van ééncellige eukaryoten en op de vroegere en huidige impact van globale veranderingen op de samenstelling en functie van microbiomen in deze systemen. Het lab herbergt het BCCM/DCG, een openbaar Biologisch Kenniscentrum (Biological Resource Center, BRC), gespecialiseerd in diatomeeën en andere microalgen en onderdeel van de Belgische gecoördineerde collecties van micro-organismen. Het lab heeft een lange geschiedenis van onderzoek naar diatomeeën, die de focus vormen van een langlopende integratieve onderzoekslijn, inclusief celbiologie van nieuwe model diatomeeënsoorten, populatiegenomica en macroecologische en biogeografische studies. In een toegepaste context richt de groep zich onder meer op de monitoring en bestrijding van schadelijke algenbloei en algenbiotechnologie. Onderzoeksonderwerpen zijn onder meer:

• soortendiversiteit, speciatie en micro-evolutie van protisten;
• aquatische en bodemmicrobiome biogeografie en functie;
• chemische ecologie van microbiële interacties;
