Een vergelijkend onderzoek van de fauna van tropische en subtropische estuariene en lagunaire systemen","Acronym":null,"AbstractEnglish":"The aim of the project is a comparative study of the 'structural' biodiversity and the causal factors by which it is induced and regulated. Present environmental factors and historical background (phylogeny of the biota and geographic evolution of the locality) are indeed main causes of the biodiversity observed today. We therefore plan to study the biodiversity in coastal ecosystems and estuaries in tropical and subtropical areas. Lagoons and estuaries are very productive ecosystems with a major impact on the functioning of open sea ecosystems and important for human activities. On the other hand, (sub)tropical areas are known to yield the highest biodiversity on which very few information is available. Moreover, semi-closed systems are very suitable to study speciation phenomena such as gene flow interruption and the origin of endemisms.","AbstractOtherLang":"De bedoeling van voorliggend project is om een aantal (sub)tropische biotopen op een volledig analoge manier te onderzoeken zodat de structurele biodiversiteit in een groot aantal facetten kan vergeleken worden Structurele biodiversiteit behelst de vergelijkende kwantitatieve beschrijving van verschillende gemeenschappen die tot op het niveau van de species worden gekarakteriseerd. De samenstelling van deze gemeenschappen kan echter op verschillende ecologische (o.a. trofische) en taxonomische niveau's worden onderzocht. De kennis van de complexiteit van een ecosysteem (=structurele biodiversiteit) moet betere inzichten kunnen verschaffen in de wisselwerking van de biota met elkaar en met hun omgeving. Daarom is standaardisatie van zowel verzamelen als verwerken van de gegevens een absolute noodzaak. De systematiek en het fylogenetisch onderzoek vormen de onderbouw van de structurele biodiversiteit en zullen een belangrijk deel uitmaken van de activiteiten. Het al dan niet voorkomen van soorten is weliswaar gebonden aan omgevingsfactoren maar heeft tevens historische gronden: de biogeografie als bepalende factor is dan ook het derde luik van het project. De relatie fylogenie en biogeograrie is bovendien onmiskenbaar: ze zijn in grote mate oorzaak en gevolg van elkaar.
