Abstract
    An investigation on plant nutrients and heavy metals in the interstitial water of freshwater tidal flat sediments along the Elbe was carried out by analyzing 2 cm subsamples from sediment cores 30 cm long. The hydrological dynamics of a high tidal flat were shown to produce a distinct biogeochemical depth zonation in the sediment, in which aerobic microbiological respiratory processes continue even in the deeper layers. This tidally mediated "oxidative pumping" results in subsequent withdrawal of assimilated inorganic N and a remobilization of Cd from highly contaminated sediments.
