This cooperation aims at joining the expertise present in these groups to gain insight in the possible restoration of the benthic life in the central area of the Kwintebank. This area is closed for sand extraction activities for a period of three years. This ecological information will provide management information necessary for a sustainable management of the sand extraction area on the Belgian Continental Shelf.\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Project description\r\n\r\n<ul><li>Objectives\r\n\r\nThe main aims of SPEEK are (1) to describe the long term effects of sand extraction on the benthic life on the Kwintebank; (2) to investigate the possible recovery of the benthic life after cessation of extraction activities in the central part of the Kwintebank; (3) to discriminate appropriate disturbance indicators for the impact assessment of sand extraction and (4) to provide management information with respect to extraction intensity and rotation of possible concession areas at sea. \r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Methodology\r\n\r\nSPEEK is investigating different benthic groups. Within the meiobenthos (all metazoans between 38µm and 1mm), focus is on the dominant taxa. The Marine Biology Section investigates the nematodes, while harpacticoid copepods are studied by AZTI. The Sea Fisheries Department explores the macrobenthos. These biological data will be backed up by geological data collected by RCMG.\r\n\r\nIn the initial phase of the project, long term effects of sand extraction on the benthic life will be investigated by compiling all available historical data. If possible, more recently collected data, originating from the sand extraction period will be added to the historical data. Analysis of these databases will allow for assessing long term changes in the benthos. This will provide us with the basic information needed to evaluate the possible recovery of the benthic communities.\r\n\r\nFurther research will evaluate the possible recovery of the different benthic groups in the central area of the Kwintebank, which is closed for sand extraction for a period of three years. The biological data will be combined with geo-acoustic measurements made in the framework of the projects Marebasse and Eumarsand. By combining traditional ecological research (analyzing diversity and community composition) with newly developed techniques at the Marine Biology Section (Nematode Biomass Spectra, MDA-modeling of nematode communities and ecotype approach for harpacticoid copepods), it will be possible to accurately describe the recovery and rate of recovery of the benthos. \r\n\r\nBy comparing (1) the response time and sensitivity of the different benthic groups to sand extraction/cessation of sand extraction and (2) the accurateness of the different methods of analyzing the data, we will be able to suggest appropriate methods for monitoring the effects of sand extraction on the benthos. The final integration of all tasks will result in the formulation of management options concerning extraction intensity and rotation of extraction areas.","AbstractOtherLang":"<ul><li>Context\r\n\r\nSPEEK is een samenwerking tussen drie Belgische labo’s (UGent/Mariene Biologie; UGent/Renard Centrum voor Mariene Geologie; CLO-DvZ) en 1 Spaans instituut (Fundación AZTI, Department Oceanography and Marine Environment). Deze samenwerking heeft als doel om de expertise binnen deze groepen te bundelen, om op die manier een inzicht te verkrijgen in het mogelijke hersel van het bodemleven in het centrale deel van de Kwintebank, dat voor een periode van drie jaar wordt afgesloten voor zandontginning. Deze ecologische informatie zal leiden tot informatie die kan aangewend worden bij het duurzaam beheer van de zandontginningsgronden op het Belgisch Continentaal Plat.\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Beschrijving van het project.\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul><li>Doelstelling\r\n\r\nSPEEK heeft als voornaamste doelstellingen om (1) de langetermijnseffecten van zandontginning op het bodemleven van de Kwintebank te beschrijven; (2) het mogelijke herstel van het bodemleven op te volgen, na de stopzetting van de ontginning in het centrale deel van de zandbank; (3) geschikte biologische instrumenten voor te stellen, die de mogelijke schade aan het benthisch milieu als gevolg van zandontginning weergeven en (4) beleidsinformatie voor te stellen met betrekking tot de intensiteit en rotatie van de ontginning in mogelijke concessiegebieden op zee.\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Methodologieën\r\n\r\nSPEEK zal zich richten op diverse groepen binnen het benthos: van het meiobenthos (alle meercelligen begrepen tussen 38 µm en 1 mm) worden de dominante taxa bestudeerd door de Sectie Mariene Biologie (Nematoda) en AZTI (Harpacticoida), terwijl onderzoek naar het macobenthos wordt uitgevoerd door DvZ. Deze biologische gegevens worden ondersteund door geologische data, die worden verzameld door RCMG.\r\n\r\nTijdens een eerste faze van het onderzoek zullen de langetermijnseffecten van zandextractie op het bodemleven worden onderzocht. Dit zal gebeuren door voor iedere groep historische data te compileren, en daar waar mogelijk aan te vullen met recente data verzameld tijdens de extractieperiode. Analyse van deze data zal dan toelaten om de veranderingen op lange termijn in te schatten. Dit is een ontontbeerlijke stap om het herstel van de bodemgemeenschappen te kunnen opvolgen.\r\n\r\nIn de tweede faze van het onderzoek wordt nagegaan hoe de verschillende groepen binnen het benthos zich eventueel herstellen in het centrale deel van de Kwintebank, dat afgesloten werd voor ontginning. Deze biologische data zullen worden ondersteund door geo-akoestische opnames die gebeuren in de projecten Marebasse en Eumarsand. Door traditionele analysemethodes (diversiteit, gemeenschapssamenstelling) te combineren met nieuw ontwikkelde technieken op de Sectie Mariene Biologie (Nematoden Biomassa Spectra, MDA modellering, ecotypes voor harpacticoide copepoden) zal het herstel en de snelheid waarmee dit gebeurd accuraat worden beschreven. \r\n\r\nDoor de vergelijking te maken van (1) de responstijd en gevoeligheid van de verschillende benthosgroepen op zandextractie/stopzetten van zandextractie en (2) de accuraatheid van de verschillende analysetechnieken, zullen we in staat zijn om monitoringsstrategieën voor te stellen met betrekking tot zandextractie.
