Abstract
The population of Patella vulgata, living on the breakwaters around Oostende, has almost completely disappeared after the severe winter of 1996/1997. During the early nineties, the species known to live there in rather limited numbers became progressively more and more abundant and was in the summer of 1996 by no means rare. Now only very few individuals survived, these that lived close to the lowtide level on the breakwaters.Previous severe winters such as the foregoing one of 1995/1996 and some in the eighties didn’t 't have such an impact on the population. On the otherhand, a recent introduction, the Japanese oyster Crassotrea gigas seemed to resist the low temperatures very well.
