ME-3c.Temporal monitoring benthos and sediment dataset mudflat Groot Buitenschoor [ME-3c.Temporele monitoring benthos en sediment dataset slikken Groot Buitenschoor]

Availability: Restricted
The data are withheld from general circulation and disclosure but access may be obtained on a case-by-case basis through negotiation

Notes: Release with permission of the appropriate parties

Description
GBL and GRB, two locations on the Buitenschoor mudflat have been sampled for sediment monthly during a period of almost 10 years. Granulometry of sediment, organic matter and benthos densities and biomass were determined.

Benthos biomass: Macrobenthos sampling and laboratory analysis
At each location monthly samples are taken with small cores (4,5 cm diameter) to a depht of 20 cm and with large cores (15 cm diameter) to a depth of 40 cm. The large cores are sieved in the field through a 3 mm mesh. All benthic samples were preserved in buffered formalin. In the laboratory the small core samples are sieved through a 1mm mesh and sorted after staining with 0,02 % Rose Bengal. Organisms are counted and identified to species level, except Nemertea and Oligochaeta. Since Annelid

Granulometric variables: Grain-size analysis
Grain size is determined using a Malvern Master Sizer
Sedimentation-erosion plots: Sedimentation-erosion plots
A sedimentation-erosion plot exists out of 3 cores that are fixed into the mudflat. The 1,5 m long cores are set up in a triangular position, 1500 mm h.o.h. (length is 1500mm). The cores form a horizontal reference plane of which the reference height TAW is known. When strong sedimentation or erosion has taken place, the cores are prolonged or shortened. Core 1 and core 2 are connected by means of a measurement row, so the distance to the bottom can be measured each 20 cm. After that core 2 an
