Data from the DIAPICNA cruise: Diazotrophic pico-cyanobacteria in the North Atlantic open ocean: their abundance and importance as a source of new nitrogen at the Azores Current Front Citable as data publication Riou, V.; Martins A.; Dehairs, F.; Prakya S. R.; Loureiro, C.; Santos, M; Alves, A. V.; (2015): Data from the DIAPICNA cruise: Diazotrophic pico-cyanobacteria in the North Atlantic open ocean: their abundance and importance as a source of new nitrogen at the Azores Current Front. https://doi.org/10.14284/40 Contact: Dehairs, Frank Availability: This dataset is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. Description The data from this dataset was collected with the R/V NRP Dom Carlos I during Cruise No. DIAPICNA-OCE-2011-V01, which aimed at unfolding the inter-linkages between N2 and CO2 fixation mediated by diazotrophs in an area of the North Atlantic Ocean where Biological N2 Fixation (BNF) is suspected to be important more The Azores Current region close to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, an oligotrophic area where contrasting conditions are found at the interface between temperate and subtropical waters, was investigated from the surface to 200m depth for geochemical indicators of N2-fixation as well as for the instantaneous N2 -fixation and CO2 -fixation rates, and the presence of unicellular diazotrophic cyanobacteria (UCYN), suspected to perform most of the N2 -fixation in the area. A South-North transect including 5 geographical sampling stations was sampled to evaluate the extent of biological N2 -fixation in the Azores Current/Front system (AzC/AzF), and to detect a potential influence of the nearby iron-rich "Rainbow" deep sea hydrothermal system. The results indicate that N2-fixation would support a large part of the CO2 -fixation in the whole area, and that the UCYN abundance may not be related with N2 -fixation activity. Diapycnal diffusion of nutrients and plankton seems enhanced by the numerous eddies generated in this area, probably regulating the growth and activity of C- and N2 -fixers Scope Themes: Water composition > Nutrients Keywords: Marine/Coastal, Phytoplankton, Unicellular Cyanobacteria (UCYN), ANE, Azores Geographical coverage ANE, Azores [Marine Regions] Temporal coverage 25 July 2011 - 3 August 2011 Parameters Abundance of N2 fixers per size fraction Methodology Ammonium (NH4+) Methodology Carbon uptake (primary production) Methodology Dinitrogen uptake (N2 fixation) Methodology Dissolved oxygen (O2) Methodology Nitrate (NO3-) Methodology Particulate organic carbon (POC) Methodology Particulate organic nitrogen (PON) Methodology Phosphate (PO43-) Methodology Salinity Methodology Silicic acid Methodology Stable C (d13C) isotopic composition of suspended organic matter Methodology Stable N (d15N) isotopic composition of suspended organic matter Methodology Water temperature Methodology Abundance of N2 fixers per size fraction: Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH) Ammonium (NH4+): Colorimetry; QUAATRO analyser Ammonium (NH4+): Colorimetry; QUAATRO analyser Carbon uptake (primary production): Isotope enrichment experiments Carbon uptake (primary production): Isotope enrichment experiments Dinitrogen uptake (N2 fixation): Isotope enrichment experiments Dissolved oxygen (O2): Winkler Method Nitrate (NO3-): Colorimetry; QUAATRO analyser Nitrate (NO3-): Colorimetry; QUAATRO analyser Particulate organic carbon (POC): Elemental Analysis Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (EA-IRMS) Particulate organic nitrogen (PON): Elemental Analysis Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (EA-IRMS) Phosphate (PO43-): Colorimetry; QUAATRO analyser Phosphate (PO43-): Colorimetry; QUAATRO analyser Salinity: CTD measurements Silicic acid: Colorimetry; QUAATRO analyser Stable C (d13C) isotopic composition of suspended organic matter: Elemental analyser - isotope ratio mass spectrometer Stable N (d15N) isotopic composition of suspended organic matter: Elemental analyser - isotope ratio mass spectrometer Water temperature: CTD measurements Contributors Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), more, data creator The National Center for Scientific Research; Institut National de Science de l'Univers; Centre d'Océanologie de Marseille; Mediterranean Institute of Oceanography (MIO), more, data creator University of the Azores (UAC), more, data creator Marinha Portuguesa, more, data creator Project DIAPICNA: Diazotrophic pico-cyanobacteria in the North Atlantic open ocean: their abundance and importance as a source of new nitrogen at the Azores Current Front, more Publication Based on this dataset Riou, V. et al.
