Description
The data from this dataset was collected with the R/V NRP Dom Carlos I during Cruise No. DIAPICNA-OCE-2011-V01, which aimed at unfolding the inter-linkages between N2 and CO2 fixation mediated by diazotrophs in an area of the North Atlantic Ocean where Biological N2 Fixation (BNF) is suspected to be important more

The Azores Current region close to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, an oligotrophic area where contrasting conditions are found at the interface between temperate and subtropical waters, was investigated from the surface to 200m depth for geochemical indicators of N2-fixation as well as for the instantaneous N2 -fixation and CO2 -fixation rates, and the presence of unicellular diazotrophic cyanobacteria (UCYN), suspected to perform most of the N2 -fixation in the area. A South-North transect including 5 geographical sampling stations was sampled to evaluate the extent of biological N2 -fixation in the Azores Current/Front system (AzC/AzF), and to detect a potential influence of the nearby iron-rich "Rainbow" deep sea hydrothermal system. The results indicate that N2-fixation would support a large part of the CO2 -fixation in the whole area, and that the UCYN abundance may not be related with N2 -fixation activity. Diapycnal diffusion of nutrients and plankton seems enhanced by the numerous eddies generated in this area, probably regulating the growth and activity of C- and N2 -fixers
