Description
The aim of the study was to investigate aqueous and dietary toxicity of Pb-halide perovskite nanoparticles (NPs) and Pb in zebrafish. Perovskite NP toxicity was evaluated by assessing mortality and gene expression (metallothionein 2 and δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase). Zebrafish larvae were exposed to Pb-halide perovskite NPs in parallel with Pb(NO3)2 exposures in the aqueous phase and zebrafish adults were exposed through diet by Pb and perovskite NP-spiked food pellets. The present dataset contains a selection of acute toxicity data, molecular analysis of gene expression, and chemical analysis of the exposure matrix after zebrafish were exposed to three lead (Pb) halide perovskite nanoparticles (NPs). All exposures were conducted in parallel to Pb nitrate exposures that were used as a positive control to assess Pb dissolution from NPs. For the zebrafish acute toxicity tests, dead larvae were assessed optically by examination of the heart beating and the gene expression levels of the exposed larvae compared were compared to untreated control groups and were obtained by the ΔΔCT method. Aqueous phase Pb concentrations were determined by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS, School of Chemistry, University of Edinburgh) to investigate Pb dissolution in perovskite NP and lead nitrate aqueous exposures of zebrafish larvae and dissolved Pb from perovskite NPs and Pb-spiked food pellets in the aquaria during the 14-d dietary exposure. Subsamples of spiked food pellets were analysed for Pb content by ICP optical emission spectroscopy (OES). All experimental work was designed and conducted at Heriot Watt University in the framework of the PhD research of Danae Patsiou under the EU FP7 project, Future Nano Needs "Framework to respond to regulatory needs of future nanomaterials and markets", grant agreement no: 604602.
