Abstract
    Natural dissolved fluorescent material was measured in the upper 300 m at stations in the eastern tropical Atlantic Ocean. Lower concentrations of the surface layer are caused by degradation by sunlight of dissolved organic substances, as was demonstrated by a laboratory experiment.
