Abstract
Gerloff's P. kalbei is not a diatom. Definitely homologous structures have shown that this sp must represent scales covering cells of unknown systematic position. These scales have been found in coastal and upstream areas, obviously tolerant to variation in salinity and if seemingly world- wide distribution. Illustrations and preliminary descriptions of cells and scales from several areas are given.
