Abstract
Numbers of radiolarians per gram carbonate-free sea-floor sediment vary widely in the Banda Sea. They are low from 0 to 950 m, high between 950 and 4800 m, and ('abnormally') low again below 4800 m water depth. We conclude that this distribution pattern is the result of masking by sediment and the occurrence of spatially limited, highly productive areas in the surface water.
