| Abstract |
Introducing species, currently a core ecological issue, is often perceived as a threat or as an inevitable phenomenon to which we must adapt. Should we really fear biological invasions? Focusing mainly on continental aquatic environments, this work develops some conceptual rationale on introducing populations before discussing the conditions whereby exotic species become naturalised. The question of consequences of these naturalisations on the host ecosystems is also covered. One chapter is reserved for an analysis of social representations in introducing species and ideological premises which underlie work by ecologists on biological invasions. |
