Palaemonetes varians (Leach, 1814) [WoRMS] Brackish water |
| Abstract |
Metacercariae become encysted in the hepatopancreas (and occasionally in other organs and tissues) of the prawn Palaemonetes varians (Leach). They are surrounded by a secondary cyst, composed of a connective tissue that seems to have been built at the expense of an accumulation of haemocytes. These observations are compared with similar facts which have been established by other authors; it can be concluded that the haemocytes of Crustacea contribute to the protection of the organism during inflammatory processes, and, in a more general way, represent a liquid mesenchymatous tissue. |
