Abstract
Insulin (40 mU/ml) stimulated oxygen consumption of the unicellular marine alga Acetabularia mediterranea, as measured by manometric techniques. This effect has been observed at the different stages of morphological development of the cells. Performic acid oxidized insulin does not enhance the oxygen consumption of Acetabularia. These results indicate that a hormone from animal origin specifically modifies plant cells metabolism.
