Abstract
In the initial chapter of Perspectives in Marine Biology, Rae (1958) suggested that cultures of marine species suitable for experimentation should be established in the laboratory. He contended that until the counterparts of the fruit fly and the guinea pig are found in the marine environment such work would lack objectivity and realism.
