Flotilla launches large survey of Antarctic krill

| Abstract |
Researchers have launched a broad international survey of krill in the Southern Ocean to learn whether the fishing industry is leaving enough for this important crustacean's natural predators, including whales and penguins. Six vessels will spend nearly 2 months mapping the abundance of krill in and around the Scotia Sea. Researchers will also test wave gliders and other tools for cheaper, more frequent surveys that could improve the management of the fishery. The survey itself won't be able to reveal how the overall krill population in the Scotia Sea might have changed since the previous large survey, in 2000, but it could help confirm whether current fishing limits are precautionary enough. |
