Abstract
The research on microbial oceanography started during 1970–1980 and approximately 10 billion/l marine viruses were found. Current research indicates that these virus‐like particles play an essential role in the environment. These particles can have impact on nutrient cycling, carbon recycling, and other ecological processes. The chapter will help understand the role of marine viruses in global biogeochemical and ecological systems of the ocean.
