Abstract
The reproductive potential (ovarian counts), realized reproduction (abdominal egg counts) actual production (stage III larval counts) and the reproductive efficiency (percent survival to stage III) vary interspecifically and intraspecifically in many species of North American crayfish. The emphasis here is on Orconectes propinquus, O. rustucus and Cambarus robustus. The causes of losses in the mean counts at the various stages of development are frequently a combination of biotic and abiotic factors such as: presence of the internal parasite Crepidos-tomum cornutum, size of female, capacity of the abdomen to protect the developmental stages, infertile eggs, lack of proper attachment of eggs to the pleopods, and growth of larvae and river current speed.
