Abstract
Li et al. (2021) investigated the phylogeny of the oysters (Mollusca: Bivalvia: Ostreidae) using a combination of mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequences. The relationships among many groups were clearly resolved in their analyses, in agreement with previous studies (Salvi & Mariottini, 2017; Guo et al., 2018), with their Fig. 2 showing high maximum-likelihood bootstraps and Bayesian-inference posterior probabilities. Unfortunately, the systematic conclusions they drew – namely, the use of the genus Crassostrea for all members of the Crassostreinae, and the continued use of the Lophinae, which renders the Ostreinae paraphyletic – are inconsistent with their phylogeny and they continue to fail to follow the rules of zoological nomenclature – citing the wrong authority for the Saccostreinae – perpetuating the erroneous conclusions of Guo et al., 2018, Cui et al., 2021. Here we justify our assertions, arguing that systematic best practice is fundamental to the goal of this journal.
