Abstract
Temperature and salinity measurements made within an area bounded by latitudes 42°S and 50°S and longitudes 178°29'E and 173°00'W are presented and discussed. The results show the influence of the Chatham Rise in determining the position of the Subtropical Convergence east of New Zealand. The surface geostrophic flow with respect to 1000 decibars is discussed and the effect of bottom topography on the flow of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current is shown. Sound velocities are calculated from the observed data, and velocity corrections for echo soundings are given and compared with those previously published.
