Abstract
Biomass burning is a key source of aerosols in southern Africa, and while most wildfires are linked to human activities, El Niño and La Niña events can also lead to conditions that are favourable for wildfire formation. Although such an influence is generally known, the effect the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) can have on aerosol emissions from fires is not well understood.
