Abstract
Two orders of Demospongiae are discussed and the New Zealand representatives of each are described. The Dendroceratida are represented by five species belonging to four genera, and the Halisarcida, established formally as a new order, is represented by one species in New Zealand, thecosmopolitan Halisarca dujardini. Definition of the characters used in descriptions of these sponges is given, as is a full discussion of the systematic affinities of the Dendroceratida.
