| Abstract |
The response of a continuously stratified, inviscid coastal sea to a harmonic background flow over a small amplitude topographic feature is studied in the frame of a linear theory. We consider, in particular, a switched-on inertial oscillation over a cosine-shaped ridge. Initially two systems of oscillations are excited over the ridge, inertial oscillations and oscillations with a topographically induced "blue shift". At the edges of the ridge inertial waves are generated by the switch-on process and propagate away. After the passage of the inertial waves the blue-shifted oscillations are annihilated and bottom intensified inertial oscillations remain over the ridge. Moreover, a stationary contribution develops where the along-ridge current is in geostrophical balance with the cross-ridge pressure gradient. |
