| Abstract |
Marine exploration and associated scientific research contribute to the knowledge and understanding of the deep seabed. Data management plays a crucial role for the International Seabed Authority (ISA) in the coordination and dissemination of such research, as mandated by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. This contribution describes the implementation of ISA data management and how it effectively supports experts in providing scientific data that include but are not limited to deep-sea ecosystems, geological structures, water masses, and potential environmental impacts from anthropogenic activities in the Area. The ISA Action Plan for Marine Scientific Research (MSR) in support of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, aims to increase global understanding of oceans, marine processes, climate affairs, and biodiversity. The ISA DeepData database, facilitated by a geospatial data management system, serves as a global repository. This chapter emphasizes the importance of partnerships in implementing a multilateral Action Plan to promote marine scientific research and collaborative initiatives, outlining the plans for the data management strategic roadmap, aiming to maximize the value of data management and enhance deep-sea research. |
