| Abstract |
Following the recent redescription of the genus Stenopora Lonsdale, 1844, the species currently included in Stenopora are reviewed. Earlier concepts of the genus, that included diaphragms and two sizes of acanthostyles, have led many authors to erroneously include new species in Stenopora. While not all original descriptions or figured materials were sufficient to determine key zoarial characters, the number of species within the genus is now significantly reduced. Characters are tabulated but species not retained in Stenopora are not formally assigned to other genera. The primary reasons for recommendation for removal from the genus are the presence of diaphragms, two sizes of acanthostyles, or non-monilate walls. Following this review species considered to belong to Stenopora remain widespread in the Carboniferous and Permian in both hemispheres and exhibit a generally non-tropical, bipolar distribution, with distinctly fewer occurrences on the Panthalassan margin of North America. |
